Govt offices cut back power, water use

The city administration Tuesday announced that it managed to cut electricity bills by 5 percent and water consumption by 15 percent between July and September this year.

"The overall result is encouraging as the central government could not even save 2 percent on electricity," City Secretary Muhayat said on the sidelines of a meeting on the city's electricity and water reduction programs.

A survey of 200 city administration buildings indicated a 5 percent cut in total electricity costs.

The administration previously set a target to reduce electricity and water consumption by 10 percent.

Among the biggest savers was the Tourism Agency, which recorded 50 percent cut in its electricity bill from July (Rp 33 million) to September (Rp 16.5 million). Some other offices, however, failed to save energy. Central-North Jakarta One-Roof Administration Office (Samsat), for example, saw a 12.5 percent increase in its electricity bill from July to September.

Eight city administration buildings are part of a pilot project of the electricity efficiency program. The buildings are: Blok G Building of the City Hall; West Jakarta municipality building; agency building in Jatinegara, East Jakarta; North Jakarta municipality building; agency building on Jl. Abdul Muis, Central Jakarta; and the Samsat buildings in West Jakarta, East Jakarta and Central-North Jakarta.

Of the eight buildings, only two are categorized as big electricity spenders as they spend between 10497.6 and 13802.4 kilowatt month per square meter on average. The two buildings are Blok G building and Abdul Muis building, and they use 11160 kilowatt month per square meter and 12088.8 kilowatt month per square meter respectively.

"We will renovate Blok G building to save energy and make it a model green building for Jakarta. We will also require building owners to follow green criteria to get building permits," Muhayat said.

The top three buildings in electricity efficiency are the Samsat buildings in West Jakarta, East Jakarta and Central-North Jakarta, which use 3254.4, 3996 and 5436 kilowatt month per square meter respectively.

The administration has been saving electricity by setting air conditioners at 25 degrees Celsius and minimizing elevator usage.

On average, energy usage by the eight buildings during the three months was recorded at 7315.2 kilowatt month per square meter, which was efficient according to the city's standards. The figure is improving compared to January and June, which recorded 10396.8 kilowatt month per square meter.

As for the water savings program, the city administration experienced fluctuations in its consumption figures over the period.

In August, the groundwater usage was recorded at 1.88 million cubic meters. The number increased to 1.93 million cubic meters in September, before falling 15 percent to 1.65 million cubic meters in October.

"We will soon issue a regulation on ground water tariffs to reduce massive exploitation and stop land subsidence," Muhayat said.
