I refer to a letter titled "Bali: Serious problems" (The Jakarta Post, Jan 12) by Susi Johnston, who was highly critical of Bali.
Then why does Susi Johnson live in Bali? Why not pack your bags and leave Bali. In my opinion, you are not (completely) right.
It is true corruption is a big problem in Indonesia and not only in Bali. All the other crimes you mentioned did not happen here five years ago, but are still less than in some (civilized?) Western countries.
Traffic can be a pain. However, perhaps instead of congesting traffic even more, you should switch to a motorbike and leave your car at home. And also be patient, you are in Asia, you do not need to hurry (pelan pelan)!
True, there doesn't seem to be any traffic rules, but if you go with the flow, there is not much to worry about.
I am very happy that Bali does not deliver the tourist expectations you describe - God forbid! I would be very sad if Bali did. Bali is not a zoo for tourists: Bali is Balinese and should stay that way.
Food and beverages of a global standard? You want to have hamburgers and fish and chips in Bali? Come on, you can't be serious! There are many local warungs and restaurants where you can get decent local food and plenty of upmarket restaurants where you can get the fanciest foods.
