PT Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) said Sunday it would reduce the construction time of its MRT project linking Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta to 58 months from the initial plan of 66 months.
"The period for the construction auction will also be cut from 12 to seven months," MRT corporate director Eddy Santosa was quoted by tempointeraktif.com as saying.
The MRT project will cost around Rp 16 trillion (US$ 1.5 billion) and construction is expected to begin in 2012.
The acceleration of the MRT project was inevitable since the MRT design auction winner, which was supposed to have been decided in November, has not yet been announced.
The MRT is expected to be able to carry up to 340,000 passengers a day and take 28 minutes to travel from Lebak Bulus to Dukuh Atas, with an estimated headway of 4.5 minutes at each stop.
