resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has expressed condolences on the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the hope that the tragedy will not end in a crisis that could create global economic instability.
President Jokowi told reporters during a visit to areas affected by flooding in West Sumatra on Tuesday that political instability in the Middle East as a result of the death of Raisi could drive up the global price of oil.
"If the price of oil increases as an impact from these developments then we could also expect an increase in the prices of other goods," Jokowi was quoted by Antara as saying.
President Raisi, who was seen as a potential successor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed when his helicopter crashed in poor weather in mountains near the Azerbaijan border.
The charred wreckage of the helicopter, which crashed on Sunday carrying Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six other passengers and crew, was found early on Monday after an overnight search in blizzard conditions.
Supreme Leader Khamenei, who holds ultimate power with a final say on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear program, said First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber would take over as interim president, the official IRNA news agency reported.
President Jokowi sent a note of condolences on the passing of Raisi on Monday saying that he was sending prayers to members of his family and the people of Iran.
Jokowi held a meeting with Raisi in May last year at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java when the late Iranian leader visited the country for bilateral talks.
