Free online reference book set for launch

A

unique and free online dictionary, thesaurus and glossary will be launched on Sunday in Malang, East Java.

It will serve as a useful guide for translating words from English into Indonesian, Indonesian into English, and as a general Indonesia reference for anyone, including students, writers, journalists and translators in particular.

Called Kateglo Bahtera, it will be launched during the celebration of the 12th anniversary of Bahtera, the main mailing list for translators and interpreters, which includes 2,000 members from all over Indonesia and some foreign countries.

Kateglo (the abbreviation of kamus, thesaurus and glossarium) is the brainchild of Ivan Lanin, a mailing list member who is an active contributor to Wikipedia Indonesia, and Romi Hardiyanto, a translator for the Firefox web browser.

They make best of the glossary of the National Education Ministry's language center, which is further developed by input from mailing list members.

"Kateglo Bahtera is the main reference and is very complete, containing tens of thousands of entries in various fields, from biology and chemistry to medicine and technology. Anyone can use it for free on the Internet," said Sofia Mansoor, one of Bahtera mailing list founders.

Sunday will also see the launching of Bahtera's first book about translation and interpreting, and a discussion about translating books and novels.

The new book, Alih Bahasa: Tersesat Membawa Nikmat, is a collection of 61 true stories written by 45 translators.
