Police chief urged to investigate Susno

O

n Monday, lawyers for two deputy leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) submitted alleged evidence of authority abuse by top detective Comr. Gen. Susno Duaji to the National Police.

The lawyers requested National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri initiate an investigation immediately.

“We submit this evidence in the hope the police will begin a thorough investigation of these allegations,” one of the lawyers, Ahmad Rivai, told journalists on Monday.

Among the evidence submitted were confessions made by Susno regarding his meeting with Anggoro Widjojo, a suspect of the Masaro graft case, who is now listed on the police’ most-wanted list.

The confessions had been made by Susno before four KPK deputies on July 15, Rivai said.

Susno had said the meeting with Anggoro took place somewhere in Singapore on July 10, a few days after the KPK had declared him a fugitive on July 7, Rivai added.

The KPK has also distributed the name to all law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

“Thus, if Susno managed to meet Anggoro in Singapore, then we should ask Susno why he did not arrest him,” another lawyer, Taufik Basari, said.

The lawyers also submitted a copy of a text message sent to KPK investigator Suaedy, containing a strong warning to halt an investigation being carried out by the KPK in East Java.

“We ask the police to find out who sent the message to Suaedy,” Rivai said.

The message was first sent to Suaedy several weeks ago, Taufik said. The message has now been widely distributed among journalists and antigraft activists.

Rivai said the lawyers would wait for the police chief to comment on the matter.

“There is one obvious violation here, which is authority abuse.

“I think the police chief needs to do something about this immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Susno was also summoned by police general monitoring inspector Comr. Gen. Jusuf Manggabarani in relation to an earlier report of authority abuse in his naming KPK deputy chiefs Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah as suspects in relation to the Masaro bribery case.

Bibit and Chandra were named suspects after the KPK put Anggoro on its travel-ban list. The police accused both deputy leaders of taking bribes from Anggoro to stop the graft investigations involving his company, PT Masaro Radiokom.

The KPK had also put Djoko Tjandra on its travel-ban list, a suspect in a bribery case against senior prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan who is now in jail. The travel ban was authorized by Bibit in April and was lifted by Chandra.

Susno has been accused of having lost his impartiality in leading investigations of the two KPK leaders because he was once wiretapped by KPK officers regarding the Century Bank scandal.

The investigation implicating Susno is believed to have led police to name Bibit and Chandra suspects.

Jusuf said he had finished an initial questioning of Susno and intended to deliver a recommendation report directly to the police chief first thing on Tuesday morning.

However, he refused to give the details of the questioning, saying his only obligation was to report the recommendations to the police chief and not to the public.

“We will wait for the police chief’s assessment of the case,” Jusuf said.

Besides Susno, several other high-ranking police officers, including economic crimes desk director Brig. Gen. Edmond Ilyas, were also summoned to the questioning.

Currently, only two of five KPK leaders remain, with KPK chief Antasari Azhar being detained by police on allegations that he masterminded a murder.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has issued a much-criticized government regulation-in-lieu-of-law to fill the vacant positions.
