Singer and producer Maia Estianty is reportedly entering politics, judging by a picture of a campaigning banner that has recently surfaced on the internet, featuring her and Democratic Party member Abimanyu in Surabaya.
A photo of the banner stating “Surabaya 2010-2015” was posted in the microblogging site Twitter on Monday.
Maia’s assistant Ryan said Abimanyu had asked Maia if she would run with him as Surabaya’s deputy major in June’s elections. However Ryan responded that Maia, the leader of the singing duo Ratu, was not ready to run with Abimanyu.
“[She’s] not ready to run with Pak Abimanyu,” Ryan said as quoted by detikhot.com.
Ryan said Abimanyu had met with Maia in January and February.
Asked about the banner in Surabaya, Ryan said that he would have to ask Maia first.
If Maia eventually runs in the election, the former wife of the cocky rock start and music producer Ahmad Dhani would be in the group of a slew of artists entering politics.
Actress Ayu Azhari recently failed to be nominated as the candidate for Sukabumi’s deputy regent after registering with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
Actor Dede Yusuf is now serving as deputy governor of West Java and Rano Karno is now Tangerang’s deputy regent. A number of artists are also serving as lawmakers and councilors.
