Police yet to investigate the cause of fire

T

he Jakarta Police found another body in the remains of a burnt sandal factory in Kamal Raya, West Jakarta, on Sunday and said questioning the factory management will happen once the search process is over.

“We found a third body that we suspect is male and 170-cm tall. We sent the body directly to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital for identification,” Kalideres Police detective chief Heru SY told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

However the body’s identity will not be confirmed until the autopsy has been completed.

He said currently a search at the scene was underway and firefighters were still trying to cool down the remaining 2 hectares of the plant.

“Currently heavy equipment is moving flammable material and rubble so we can easily search for possible victims,” Herru said.

“There are still fire spots everywhere, therefore we cannot undertake an incident scene investigation yet,” he said.

He added that considering many chemical substances had spilled in the plant they must wait for the fire to be extinguished thoroughly before conducting an investigation into the cause or source of the fire.

“We will continue coordinating with the fire brigade,” he said.

Flames broke out at the factory Thursday afternoon and firefighters could only control the blaze more than 24 hours later.

To date Herru said he had not scheduled questioning factory owners or management because he was still focusing on the search.

“We will contact them later when the situation is conducive. We should not force ourselves to move onto the next step with this situation,” he said.

Several fires broke out in Jakarta last week.

Earlier Thursday, a fire also broke out at the Senen Inpres Market in Central Jakarta, razing 250 kiosks and 80 street vendors’ stalls, causing an estimated Rp 8.5 billion (US$929,470) in losses.
No casualties were reported in the earlier incident.

On Saturday the city also recorded another fire incident off a yacht at Pantai Mutiara, North Jakarta, adding to a total of 46 fire incidents in the city this year.
