hree men died and two more were in critical condition Monday after they consumed a notorious home-made alcoholic brew in Salatiga, Central Java.
Salatiga Police deputy chief Comr. Rugaya Renwarin said that the police had detained a trader selling
the alcoholic beverage and confiscated his supplies.
The three dead victims were Paul Jerry, 29; Joko Supriyadi, 59; and Suwito, 33.
Those in critical condition Monday evening were Agus Ardianto, 30; and Wagiman, 40.
Seven others who drank the brew were also brought to hospital.
Suwito’s wife, Priani, said that her husband had bought the alcohol purely for his own consumption on Friday and had not been partying. The next day, she said, he became sick and his condition continued to worsen until Sunday night.
He was taken to hospital but passed away, she said.
Priani said that the family had learned of Suwito’s cause of death from the autopsy report.
The incident in Salatiga was the latest in a string of incidents that have seen in most cases poor men die or fall seriously ill after drinking poisonous home-made alcohol.
In January last year, the home-made cocktail, popularly known as oplosan, killed 15 people in Semarang, Central Java.
In other Central Java towns, the same brew killed 23 people in Tegal in May last year, three in Pati in May, and two more in Kebumen in October.
This year, the lethal drink killed three in Brebes in March and the most recent case saw three die in Kudus.
