ENPASAR: Earth Day and Year of Biodiversity 2010 commemorations will take place Thursday at Serangan Island, some 15 kilometers south of Denpasar. The event, organized by environmental NGO Telapak will be attended by hundreds of students, activists and business community representatives.
"This will be a national-scale commemoration. The focus of the event is coral conservation. The commemoration will be an important step in our effort to engage the public in protecting and conserving coral," the event's coordinator, I Wayan Patut, said Tuesday.
On Thursday, similar events will also be held across the nation.
"In Bali, events will be held in Nusa Penida, Tanjung Benoa and Bondalem village. But the center of the commemoration is Serangan."
Serangan was selected as the central site since locals have succeeded in organizing a community-based coral transplantation program since 2003. - JP
