ead of Kerobokan Penitentiary Siswanto assured Thursday that the Australian convicted drug smuggler, Schapelle Leigh Corby, was stable after the convict recently appealed for clemency on grounds of mental illness.
Siswanto said he was concerned about comments saying Corby was suffering from severe depression. He questioned the validity of the examination report in the clemency documents.
"She's fine," he said. "She's safe as are other prisoners here."
Corby was sentenced to 20 years in prison after she was arrested at Denpasar's Ngurah Rai Airport in October 2004 carrying 4.2 kilograms of marijuana. She is currently serving her sentence at Kerobokan Penitentiary in Denpasar.
The convict has appealed for clemency from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the grounds of mental illness. The plea was proposed by Corby through her lawyer Iskandar Nawing late last month at the Denpasar District Court.
The clemency plea is backed by reports from two psychiatrists. Corby's psychiatrist Dr. Denny Thong said in a statement on May 26 last year that she suffered "depression with psychotic symptoms".
The examination was conducted upon request by the Australian Consulate General.
He recommended that Corby be medically supervised. The clemency plea also includes a report from Australian psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Phillips, who said that Corby acted in the manner of a child and was susceptible to being exploited. Siswanto said he had not received report that Corby was undergoing an examination inside the penitentiary.
Corby's lawyer Iskandar maintained that the medical examination by Dr. Denny Thong had been approved by the penitentiary.
He said that Corby was examined twice last year, with the first examination conducted inside the penitentiary, and the second one in Trijata Hospital.
