President `gives green light' to investigate regent

EDAN: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has endorsed a police investigation into Simalungun Regent Zulkarnaen Damanik for his alleged involvement in academic fraud, a Simalungun community leader says.

Village elder Pardi Nasution said the police had, however, not followed up on this.

He said the endorsement letter from the President was issued on April 13.

"We don't know why the police are stalling," he said, adding that copies of the President's letter had been widely circulated among community members.

North Sumatra police chief Oegroseno said police were still studying the case.

"I need time to study the case because it had happened long before I moved here," he said, adding that he did not know of any letter issued by the President.

Zulkarnain, who took office in 2005, is currently seeking a second term.

He is backed by the Democratic Party, the Golkar Party and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (P-DIP). - JP
