AKARTA: A group of city residents installed Thursday a new iron gate on the Khouw mausoleum in Petamburan, Central Jakarta, as part of an independent program to save the neglected historical site.
Spokeswoman Graece Tanus said the group of history lovers was now collecting donations to clean up the mausoleum’s park and to research the complete history of the 83-year-old site.
“Since the Khouw’s descendants never visit the mausoleum, no one has taken care of the site for years,” she said.
Located in the middle of the Petamburan public cemetery, the European-style mausoleum houses the preserved body of legendary Chinese landlord Khouw Oen Giok and his wife.
In early 1990s, the gate of the bunker was stolen, making it easy for vandals to steal carved marble ornaments and deface its walls. — JP
