AKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo will officially open the Passer Baroe Festival at Pasar Baru market, Central Jakarta, on Friday night to promote the city's oldest shopping area.

He said the festivities would be begin before that at 2 p.m. with a cultural parade and traditional games.

The parade will include student marching bands, ondel-ondel (giant Betawi-style dolls), tanjidor (traditional Betawi orchestra) and barongsai (Chinese lion dance), while traditional games will feature boat races and panjat pinang (betel pole climbing).

Shops will offer discounts up to 80 percent for products such as textiles, shoes and accessories throughout the three-day festival to entice people to visit the historical shopping area that dates back to 1820. The annual event is also part of the city's 483rd anniversary celebration. - JP
