fter several attorneys representing corruption suspects passed a first round of review, the committee selecting the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) new chairman set up web sites and an email address for the general public to comment and forward information on candidate integrity.

A verification team has been set up to analyze information on the integrity, capacity and character of eligible candidates, said committee deputy head Insp. Gen. (ret.) MH Ritonga on Sunday.

“The verification team is comprised of several governmental agencies, such as the National Police, Attorney General’s Office and State Intelligence Agency, and NGOs,” he said.

Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar announced that 145 of 287 candidates met the basic  administrative requirements of the KPK’s top post and would proceed to the next step.

Most of the successful applicants are lawyers, such as Henry Yosodiningrat, attorney of former police chief detective Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji; Raja Bonaran Situmeang, attorney for graft defendant Anggodo Widjojo; Alamsyah Hanafiah, attorney for former state power firm PT PLN official Hariadi Sadono; and Sugeng Teguh Santoso, attorney of high-profile graft witness Ari Muladi.

Situmeang, who was allegedly involved in a scheme to disband the KPK in 2009, said he was ready to compete with any participant.

“I have represented people accused of corruption, so I’m familiar with how corrupt people operate.”
“It’s an advantage,” he said via text message on Sunday.

Former presidential advisory council member Jimly Asshiddiqie and Judicial Commission chairman Busyro Muqoddas, who will end his term in August, were also deemed to have met administrative requirements.

Patrialis said Busyro would not have to leave his current post to continue the selection process.
“It is not a problem,” he said.

Candidates who have not left their posts will have to decide at some point whether to resign or continue the selection process, he said.

Candidates who passed the first round must now write personal statements and pass a four-hour, open-book competency test on subjects determined by the selection committee, he said.

The minister also said the public would be able to evaluate the 145 candidates and submit comments to the selection committee.

The public can access profiles of the 145 candidates at www.djpp.depkumham.go.id and www.depkumham.go.id. Information about candidates can be email to pansel_kpk@yahoo.co.id.

“The public can submit information until July 28,” Patrialis said. (map/ipa)
