Indosat sees most growth in traffic during Idul Fitri: Govt

T

elecommunications traffic served by Indonesia’s second-largest operator, PT Indosat, jumped significantly compared to other operators, Telkomsel, Telkom and XL Axiata, the Communications and Information Technology Ministry says.

Indosat reported a 142 percent increase in text message traffic, a 138 percent increase in voice traffic, and a 108 percent increase in data traffic during Idul Fitri on Friday — all compared to the average traffic on normal days, ministry spokesman Gatot S Dewo Broto said Monday.

Indosat served around 533 million text messages on Friday, far above the 375 million it handles on a normal day, while Indosat’s voice traffic also increased 138 percent to 360 million minutes, he said.

The company had anticipated the peak during Idul fitri by increasing the capacity of its text message services by 200 percent to 900 million text messages a day, Indosat corporate communications chief Eni Nur Ifati said.

Indosat had also increased its voice service capacity by 120 percent to 700 million minutes per day, he said.

The company had noted that a growth of voice traffic occurred in several areas, namely South Sumatra (197.37 percent), East Java (154 percent) and Central Java (153 percent), while the growth in text messages occurred in East Java (147.24 percent), Central Java (145.86 percent) and Sulampapua (138.74 percent).

Indonesia’s largest telecommunications operator, PT Telkom Indonesia, also reported a 40 percent increase in voice traffic and a 20 percent increase in text message traffic across Central Java and Yogyakarta alone.

Meanwhile, XL Axiata also booked a significant growth in telecommunication traffic during the Idul Fitri holidays.

Based on ministry data, XL Axiata served 587 million short messages during the holiday, up from 470 million on a normal day.

It also saw an increase in voice traffic to 670 million minutes, up from 510 million minutes on a normal day.

“From the total national traffic growth, Axiata contributed 35 percent for West and Central Java and Yogyakarta, and 24 percent for East Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara,” Dewa Broto said.

Meanwhile, the biggest player in the market, PT Telkomsel, a subsidiary of state telecommunications company PT Telkom, saw only a slight growth in telecommunications traffic during holidays.

“The company served 809 million short messages, an 11 percent increase compared to the 727 million on normal days,” Dewa Broto said.

However, Telkomsel had also seen a slight decline in voice services, which dropped 6 percent to 832 million minutes.
