Maia experiences domestic violence

span class="inline inline-left">JP?R. Berto Wedhatama JAKARTA: The brain behind the Duo Maia group, Maia Estianti, has recently been appointed as ambassador of anti-domestic violence by the Women’s Empowerment and Children’s Protection Ministry with the Legal Aid Institute for Women’s Protection (LBH APIK).

Singer-songwriter Maia says that reports on domestic violence have not yet been handled seriously.

“Legal proceedings on domestic violence cases in Indonesia have not been handled well,” she said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

Maia, former wife of musician and producer Ahmad Dani, said she has experienced domestic violence herself. “I once made a report to the police but it was not addressed. At that time, I was experiencing physical, psychological and economical violence. [You] might have watched it through infotainment,” she said

She said the case she reported was closed without completion. “What disappointed me was that I reported psychological violence but it was not proven. They did not know that I was emaciated inside my room. The person who conducted the psychological violence wasn’t proven guilty and the case was closed,” she said. — JP
