Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has called on the operators of the TransJakarta bus rapid transit system to improve the recruitment of drivers
akarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has called on the operators of the TransJakarta bus rapid transit system to improve the recruitment of drivers.
Fauzi said a better screening process would result in the fleet having more skilled drivers, which in turn would contribute in curbing reckless driving.
Last week, a fourth grader in Mampang, M. Rizki Firmansyah, was killed after being hit by a TransJakarta bus.
“I don’t want a repeat of this [accident],” Fauzi said late last week.
He also urged TransJakarta operators to set up a team to monitor the behavior of drivers.
TransJakarta quickly balked at Fauzi’s proposal, with operations manager Gunardjo saying that the recruitment of drivers was not the responsibility of the company.
“The entire recruitment process — from the selection, administration, field and health tests — is conducted by private companies we hired,” he said.
Jakarta Police said that in 2010, there were 430 accidents on busway lanes, an increase from 303 accidents in 2009. — JP
