AKARTA: The Immigration Detention Center in Kalideres, West Jakarta, implemented new security procedures for visitors to the facility, following the recent death of two foreign nationals detained at the center.
Last week, 37-year old Indian national Majit Singh, and 37-year old Russian national Alexander Sharin died after consuming beverages brought by a visitor to the facility.
“We will step up measures to monitor items brought by visitors,” warden Saffar M. Godam said.
Saffar said he would allow visitor inside the facility only during working hours. “Night visits are prohibited,” he said.
Saffar also said the detention center would hire more female guards as the male guards could not conduct body searches on female visitors.
“As it stands, 90 percent of our visitors are women,” he said.
The detention center currently holds 97 detainees. — JP
