AKARTA: A billboard erected by members of the Democratic Party in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta, collapsed on Thursday, disrupting traffic from Kuningan to Jl. Sudirman.

The billboard, bearing a picture of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and embattled Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum, and announcing the party’s national meeting, collapsed at noon, covering part of the

Jl. KH. Mas Mansyur intersection.

Personnel from the Jakarta Public Order Agency arrived an hour later to remove the billboard.

One of the officers, Yudi, was quoted as saying by kompas.com that the billboard had collapsed after the bamboo poles holding it up were blown over by strong wind.

“One way or another this billboard was going to collapse. There’s no way bamboo poles this size could support it,” Yudi said.
