he Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru facilitated on Saturday the repatriation of 77 Indonesians, mostly migrant workers, from Malaysia to Batam, the Riau Islands, in cooperation with the Machap Umboo Immigration Detention Centre (DTI) in Malacca state.
The consulate general, located in the capital of Johor state, has so far repatriated over 300 Indonesians in three batches from Malaysia this year, including the group sent home on Aug. 9. The neighboring country has become a top destination for Indonesian migrant workers due to its proximity and cultural similarities, which makes it much easier for them to adapt.
The latest group of deportees included 71 migrant workers, comprising 35 men, 34 women and two girls, while another six Indonesians categorized as vulnerable, comprising two men, three women and one boy, were repatriated after completing their immigration process in Malaysia, Bernama news agency reported.

In a written statement, the consulate’s functional coordinator Jati Heri Winarto said the group was repatriated as part of a series of anniversary events to commemorate Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day.
The consulate general bore the cost of ferry tickets and seaport tax for each deportee, while members of its citizen services and protection task force accompanied them on their journey home from Johor Bahru’s Stulang Laut Port to Batam Center Port.
As soon as they arrived in Batam, the group was handed over to the local Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Service Post (P4MI) for further processing prior to the final leg of their journey to their hometowns.
