resident Prabowo Subianto in his recent visit to Malaysia promised to work together with the Malaysian government to solve problems surrounding migrant workers. The statement came shortly after a fatal shooting of Indonesian citizens in Selangor.
"We will resolve our bilateral issues, including those surrounding manpower. We have agreed to increase cooperation in all sectors," Prabowo said in a statement following his bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday.
Aside from addressing migrant labor issues, Prabowo said that he and Anwar also discussed geopolitical and regional issues, as well as palm oil production, as Indonesia and Malaysia are the world’s biggest producers of the commodity and together account for 80 percent of global palm oil production.
“The main thing is the political will that Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to work closely together. We can solve any technical problems that arise [as long as there’s] the political and strategic will,” Prabowo added.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Prabowo’s visit reflected “the strong and special bond of friendship” between the two neighboring countries. It was also the first state visit by a foreign head of state following the installation of Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar as the 17th King of Malaysia.
“As close neighbors with strong ties and founding members of ASEAN, this state visit reflects the commitment of both countries to elevate bilateral relations to a higher level for the prosperity and progress of both nations, as well as for the region at large,” the ministry said in a statement.
