T

he acid attack on the deputy coordinator of rights group Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Andrie Yunus was so brazen and senseless that it warrants a condemnation in the strongest possible terms.

The brutality with which the attack was executed and the apparent objective to inflict maximum bodily harm can send chills down the spine of anyone who watches the CCTV recording of the incident.

That is exactly the intention of those designed the attack; to terrorize human rights defenders, pro-democracy activists, government critics and journalists whose job is to inquire, question and challenge government policies.

In the case of Andrie, his line of work has been the promotion of civilian control over the military, an issue which his organization Kontras has been campaigning on for over two decades now.

Andrie, who is now receiving treatment for severe burns at Cipto Mangunkusumo Central Hospital, first made headlines in March last year, when he disrupted a House of Representatives closed-door meeting to finalize the draft for the amendment of the 2004 Law on the Indonesian Military (TNI).
