JAKARTA: Indonesian badminton veteran Taufik Hidayat is attempting to revive the popularity of the sport by funding the renovation of 30 courts in East Jakarta
AKARTA: Indonesian badminton veteran Taufik Hidayat is attempting to revive the popularity of the sport by funding the renovation of 30 courts in East Jakarta.
“I hope this will reignite Indonesians’ love for badminton. People were very enthusiastic about the sport years ago,” the 31-year-old former World and Olympic champion said on the sidelines of a renovation ceremony at the Pondok Bambu Permai residential estate in East Jakarta on Saturday.
Taufik said he chose to renovate courts in East Jakarta as he would soon launch the Taufik Hidayat Arena Sports Club in the municipality.
“We want to start [social] activities close to the Taufik Hidayat Arena. However, we certainly want to expand to other areas, including in my hometown,” the Bandung native said.
Taufik added that he hoped renovating community badminton courts would attract young talents to the sport. — JP
