fter successfully hosting the recent Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championships, Southeast Asian (SEA) Games cohost Palembang will host another volleyball event seen as a test for its preparations for the Games.
Twenty countries are scheduled to take part in 2011 Asia Pacific Beach Volleyball Championships in Palembang, South Sumatra, in early October.
South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said the tourney would be seen as a test for the city’s preparations for the 26th SEA Games in November.
“If all goes as planned, we will host the championships in early October,” Alex said, adding that the event was previously scheduled to be held on Aug. 23-25 in Bali.
Each participating country will send men’s and women’s teams, forcing organizers to be ready to accommodate hundreds of athletes.
Given the number of countries participating at the event, Alex said he considered the championships bigger than the volleyball event at the Games, which will features teams from 11 countries.
“[Hosting this event] won’t be a problem for South Sumatra because the event is part of the province’s preparations for the Games. If we can do it at an Asian level, than hosting the Games won’t be any trouble,” he added.
Given the relatively smooth running of the Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship last week, Alex said he was optimistic organizers would make a success of this next event.
The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), he said, had praised the facilities and organization of the recent tournament.
“The president of the AVC told me that July’s event was the best in the championship’s history,” Alex said.
Bank Sumsel Babel, one of the sponsors for both events, said it would continue to support the development of volleyball in the country by supporting both national and international events in South Sumatra.
However, construction on the beach volleyball venue at Jakabaring Sports City is only 15 percent complete. The developer and the Venues Construction Committee for the SEA Games remain optimistic that the venue would be ready by next month.
