he Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) ethics council said Monday it will announce the results of its weeks-long inquiry into an alleged breach of ethics by three commission leaders on Oct. 6, a council member has said.
The council launched the investigation to respond to a rash of allegations made by graft suspect and former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin, who said he had made illicit deals with several KPK officials, including deputy chairman Chandra M. Hamzah.
“Before we make the results public on Oct. 6, we will reconfirm all the information that we have gathered to each of the KPK’s leaders,” KPK official Said Zainal Abidin told reporters on Monday.
Despite the council’s decision to show the results to the KPK leaders on Oct. 3 before announcing it to the public, Said assured that KPK leaders would not interfere with the results.
He said that as of Monday, the ethics council has clarified all information from the KPK’s leaders, except for deputy chair Haryono Umar and secretary-general Bambang Praptono Sunu.
So far, the council has questioned all the KPK leaders named by Nazaruddin in his accusation. They were Chandra, M. Jasin, current KPK leader Busyro, and Haryono Umar. In addition, the council has examined related individuals, such as Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum, Democratic Party politicians Saan Mustofa, and Benny K. Harman, as well as independent journalist Iwan Piliang, and also Nazaruddin himself.
The ethics council previously said it would declare the results of its two-month investigation on Friday of last week. However, people’s expectations were thwarted with the announcement by council member Ahmad “Buya” Syafii Maarif, who said it would be delayed until Oct. 6, citing technical reasons.
Nazaruddin accused the KPK’s deputies Jasin and Chandra of manipulating his case and receiving bribes from Anas. (rpt)
