fter poor showings at recent tournaments, mixed doubles pair Fran Kurniawan Teng and Pia Zebadiah Bernadet were dropped from Indonesia’s Southeast Asian Games badminton line-up on Thursday.
“We were not doing so well lately. We were having difficulties in adjusting ourselves to the ever-changing rhythm of our opponents,” Fran told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
The world No. 10 pair’s performance had slumped during the opening rounds of consecutive tournaments in Denmark and France.
At the ongoing French Open Superseries, the pair lost in a shocking 17-21, 19-21 to Thailand second-tier doubles Mannepong Jongjit and Savitree Amitapai on Wednesday.
At the Denmark Open Superseries Premier, the duo were similarly crushed by South Korean qualifiers Ko Sung Hyun and Eom Hye Wom 14-21, 16-21.
The Indonesian SEA Games squad will replace Fran and Pia with world No. 19 pair Debby Susanto and M. Rijal, who reached the quarterfinals in Odense, despite losing during the opening in Paris.
“I received confirmation from coach Richard [Mainaky] yesterday,” Fran said. Richard was not available for comment on Thursday.
The pair had briefly displayed their partnership potential during the Sudirman Cup mixed team championships earlier this year.
