AKARTA: Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin says the ministry will help disseminate information to the public about how to use social media in accordance with the 2008 Information and Electronic Transaction Law.
“I’m concerned that the freedom of expression offered by social media has often been misused by ignoring norms and decency, violating people’s personal rights and dignity,” he said on Sunday as quoted by detik.com, when asked about the ministry’s priority programs for 2012.
He said the public had failed to find the balance between freedom of expression and responsibility.
“What should be prioritized in 2012 is dissemination of Article 11 from the 2008 Information and Electronic Transaction Law, which stipulates the rights, obligations and punishments surrounding the use of information technology,” Amir said.
In the human rights field, he claimed there had been “no gross human rights violations” and there would be no such human rights violations in the coming year.”
