AKARTA: The Pedestrian Community (KAKI) has supported the idea of making Jan. 22 the day of the pedestrian to further protect the rights of pedestrians.

“The city should also provide proper and safe facilities for pedestrians in Jakarta, not only for motorists,” KAKI coordinator Awalil Rizky said.

Around 25 KAKI members gathered on Sunday at Tugu Tani to pray for the victims of the deadly incident that took place on Jan. 22 in which nine pedestrians were killed by a car that had mounted the sidewalk.

Another KAKI member Iwan Syamariansyah said the group would continuously promote the rights of pedestrians by organizing a biweekly walking activity to increase walking habits among Jakartans.

Previously, urban activists Marco Kusumawijaya and Glenn Marsalim proposed that Jan. 22 be known as Pedestrians’ Day in remembrance of the pedestrians who were killed in the recent fatal accident.
