AKARTA: The Health Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that KH, a housemaid in Tangerang, Banten, died of avian influenza, stating that the 19-year-old woman was the third victim of the deadly virus in Greater Jakarta this year.
Rita Kusriastuti, the director of animal-borne infectious disease control at the Health Ministry, said that KH died on Feb. 13 after being treated for one day at Sari Asih Hospital in Karawaci, Tangerang.
KH started to display symptoms of the bird flu on Feb. 8 and went to a clinic for treatment for high fever and a cough. Her condition deteriorated and she was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 12.
The ministry had monitored her workplace in Tangerang and hometown in Kebumen, Central Java. Rita said that KH temporarily returned home early this month. “But we found no sick poultry that she could pick up the virus from at either place. It was probably from a sick fowl she cooked at her home on Feb. 4.”
KH was the third casualty after North Jakarta resident PDY died on Jan. 7 and his little sister ASR on Jan. 16.
