fter being treated for several weeks at the National Police Hospital in East Jakarta, the police transferred alleged gang leader John Kei to detention facilities at their headquarters on Friday morning.

John arrived in an ambulance and was rushed on a gurney through one of the buildings in the compound, he was smiling when he arrived.

The transfer was conducted under the tight supervision of dozens of armed police officers.

“Today is his first day here and he will be staying here for the next 20 days. We will not count the days he spent in hospital,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said.

The law regulates a maximum of 20 days’ police detention pending trial which is extendable to another 20 days by a district court.

John underwent a medical examination at the police’s medical center before being placed in a detention facility of the narcotics unit, he said.

“He will occupy a cell by himself. The other suspects are in different cells in the same area,” Rikwanto said. The five other suspects in detention are Candra Kei, Tuce Kei, Ancola Kei, Dani Res and Kupra.

Rikwanto added that John could have doctor’s visits as he was still in recovery.

John was treated for several weeks in the National Police Hospital after being shot in the leg by police during his arrest last month. While at the hospital he was questioned about his alleged role in the murder of a businessman.

The police named John a suspect in the murder of PT Sanex Steel Indonesia owner Tan Harry Tantono, aka Ayung, on Jan. 26, after they allegedly found CCTV footage placing him at the hotel where the victim was killed on the day of the murder.

John is suing the Jakarta Police over his arrest, which he claims violated procedures.

John’s lawyer, Indra S. Lubis, said at the pre-trial hearings at the South Jakarta District Court that the police did not have a warrant when they arrested him and that they shot him in the leg without warning even though he did not resist arrest.

He also questioned the confiscation of his property, including a Jeep Wrangler, a silver Vertu cellular phone and Rp 5.25 million (US$575) in cash, during the arrest.

Indra said the police did not have a confiscation order from the court. The police argued that they had shown the order during the arrest, but John refused to sign it.
