At a Glimpse: New music landmark emerges with Orange Cliff

A

n upstart record label, Orange Cliff Records, has released a compilation album featuring three promising rock bands — Suri, Sigmun and Jelaga — under one 12-inch vinyl release.

The Bandung-based record label planted its feet firmly in the Indonesian rock scene with its first release on Sept. 29, with tracks running the gamut from Jelaga’s thrashing punk metal opener “Red Sky” to the gutsy, driving beat of Sigmun’s “The Long Haul”.

“We want to bring back the culture of buying records in a physical format. Releasing a record on vinyl is form of deep appreciation for the musician because people who want to have the record need to put out extra effort compared to listening to it through an iPod, laptop or any other digital device,” says Anindito from Orange Cliff Records.

The self-titled album features brilliant artwork by Morrg, one of Bandung’s finest artists.

“We thought of the collectable value when we chose to release this album on vinyl, because you’re not only selling audible material but also the packaging, artwork and the beauty of vinyl itself,” Anindito continued.

For the same reason, the album is a limited release, with only 100 hand-numbered copies available. “There are no plans for a repressing once the stock is sold out and it’s up to the bands if they want to put the songs on this record on another release,” says Anindito.

Though Suri and Jelaga have a few albums to their credit, both created new songs for the compilation. Sigmun, having attracted broad attention for their contribution to the soundtrack of the blockbuster action movie The Raid, is the most promising one. They’re all playing rock music.

“There’s no particular reason why we choose these bands [for this compilation]. It’s just that eventually, we came to love each other and we really love their music,” explains Anindito.
