Boxers train for SEA Games, Olympics

A

s many as 23 boxers slated to compete in next year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the 2016 Brazil Olympics are expected to begin their training on Saturday in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Training director John Amanupunyo said that the trainees comprise 9 youth and 14 adult boxers, both male and female.

“The boxers will undergo training up to the Golden Glove championship in December. Particularly for the youths, some of them will take part in an event in Armenia,” John said as quoted by Antara on Sunday.

The Golden Glove, which features national boxers from across the country, will be held in Makassar Dec. 6-10.

The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) has removed several nominees from the training list, which according to John was part of the association’s uncompromised commitment to work toward achievements. Among those dropped were Nobertha Tajum (54 kg), Kisa Kmuur (57 kg), Selly Wanimbo (48 kg) and Dolince Sanadi (60 kg).

He said lackluster trainees would face expulsion.

“Erico Amanupunyo, who is my own son, will be ejected if he does not show seriousness in training. We do this so that we can achieve results in international competitions,” he said.

Next year’s SEA Games, a multi-event sporting showcase among Southeast Asian nations, will be hosted in Myanmar in December. Boxers from Thailand and the Philippines traditionally dominate the medal chase in the sport.
