enior actress and former child singer Ira Maya Sopha says that parents and teachers have the responsibility to teach the nation’s youth to sing and appreciate kiddie tunes instead of popular songs with adult themes and lyrics.
“Most kids today can’t sing children’s songs. This must be the concern of every one of us, not only the parents but the teachers as well,” said the 44-year-old singer, who shot to fame in 1978 when she sang “Sepatu Kaca” (Glass Shoes) in a local Cinderella musical.
According to Ira, the simplest way to teach kids about children’s songs is to sing the songs with them and teach them about the content.
“Like [classic local kid’s tune] ‘Ba-lonku’ [My balloons]. Kids have to know what the song is about. We have to teach them,” she said, as quoted by tribunnews.com.
