View all search resultsA day after stopping short of announcing an evacuation order, the government issued the highest alert level for its citizens in Iran on Thursday, advising them to pack a bag of essential documents and emergency supplies and get in touch via official channels.
he government activated its evacuation plan for citizens residing in Iran on Thursday following a renewed exchange of attacks between Iran and Israel.
At least 386 Indonesians live in Iran, mostly students in provincial capital Qom, located some 140 kilometers south of Tehran.
“In the past two days, the intensity of Israel’s attacks has only increased, attacking not only military targets but also civilian targets,” Foreign Minister Sugiono said early on Thursday in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where he is accompanying President Prabowo Subianto for bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin.
“I have now decided to raise the alert status for our embassy in Tehran from level 2 to level 1,” he said, adding that the Foreign Ministry and the embassy had been preparing evacuation plans for Indonesians residing in Iran since issuing the highest alert level.
“We have also communicated with several neighbors of Iran to ask for their assistance for Indonesians crossing their [land] borders during the planned evacuation process,” Sugiono said.
He did not name the neighboring countries or provide additional details of the evacuation plan.
Through its social media accounts on Thursday, the embassy urged all Indonesians in Iran to report via its telephone and WhatsApp hotlines or the ministry’s website. It also advised them to pack an emergency bag containing essential documents including their passports as well as enough cash, food, water and medicine for several days.
