AKARTA: Police have ended an antiterrorist sweep by withdrawing around 300 officers and Army personnel from Gunung Biru in Tamanjeka, 30 kilometers from Poso, Central Sulawesi.
Central Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Dewa Parsana said on Tuesday that the police had decided to end the operation because the area was already clear and safe from bombs and terrorists.
The police kicked off the operation after a series of attacks in Poso that started in August, including an explosion at a traffic police post in October and the murder of two police officers in Tamanjeka.
Police suspected Gunung Biru was a terrorist base and training camp.
During the operation, officers found several viable improvised explosive devices, homemade firearms and five live rounds, four axes, five knives, various electronic components and a board which was allegedly used to discuss attack strategies. However, police did not make any arrests.
On Nov. 3, police raided a house and arrested Yasin, an alleged member of terrorist group Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid, in the Kayamanya subdistrict in Poso city. The raid resulted in the death of community leader Abdul Halid, which triggered violent protests by locals.
