Zaki maintains top Tangerang post on verdict

T

he Constitutional Court has ruled in favor of Tangerang regent-elect Ahmed Zaki Iskandar and his deputy Hermansyah in a lawsuit filed by former candidate Achmad Suwandi and running mate Muchlis.

Court deputy chief justice Achmad Sodiki read out the verdict on Tuesday, stating that the plaintiffs had no legal grounds in the case because they had not complained about the voter list even though the number of eligible voters did not match the combined number of valid and invalid ballots.

“The discrepancy between the numbers happened because of an error in entering the data […] That mistake, however, does not change the number of votes garnered by each pair of candidates,” the court’s website stated.

The justices said the court also found no proof of bogus voters, voters listed twice or extra votes as claimed by the plaintiffs based on the documents the latter had submitted.

“Although if the number of votes was manipulated in Polling Station 14 in Kampung Besar, the result would not have a significant impact because, as the plaintiffs said, there were only two additional votes,” the justices said.

Zaki, the son of former Tangerang regent Ismet Iskandar, won the most votes in the regency election in Tangerang, Banten, last month.
