Text your say: Islamic teaching in Catholic schools?

I think this action doesn’t support our unity in diversity motto.

Parents enrolling their children at a Catholic school must have been informed that the religious lessons provided were only concerning Catholicism.

What do you think of those who complain about a Padang restaurant refusing to serve Italian food?

Hiréka Éric

That’s stupid. People who choose a Catholic school or an Islamic school are fully aware of the religious lessons in that school, hence the name of the school.

In this case, if Catholic kids choose to attend a Muslim school, the school must provide Catholic instruction for Catholic students, right?

Nina Ulfah N Gaffar

Do pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) provide catholic instruction?

Taco de Vries

It’s obviously a Catholic school. It’s built to support and cover most Catholic students.

Learning Islam is not only about doing in school, it can be learnt everywhere. To my knowledge, many parents call ustadz (teachers of religion) to their house to teach their kids.

Closing schools just because they refuse to teach Islam is such a silly action. You are very selfish and you are only thinking about you own interests.

If you are smart enough, why don’t you start thinking about establishing Islamic schools that are the same quality as Catholic schools?

You people always try to find a reason to disturb Christians. The world laughs at you. Learning Islam can be conducted everywhere. Not only in school.

Rahayu Marlina

Those Muslims send their children to non-Muslim schools on the basis of the better secular education they provide. If this secular education is accompanied by some religious teaching, then this would be a complete deal, which I think most Muslims would be happy with.

This does not mean that Catholic schools can’t teach their own faith to Christian children.

It is simply a welcome addition that will in the long term, increase mutual respect and tolerance toward the faiths of others.

Zaki Hammaad

I understand that the students of Catholic schools perform better than those in Islamic schools. I have been told by teachers in Muslim schools.

If true, this might be the reason why Muslim parents send their children to Catholic schools. The Religious Affairs Ministry might praise these schools for their good work. I really do not understand what religion has to do with education.

Peter Verduin

Muslim parents put their children forward for Catholic schools because of the quality of the education and discipline applied by teachers in teaching, not to study any religion.

Catholic schools are not allowed to force pupils of different religions to follow Catholic teachings and on the other hand, Catholic schools should not be obliged to teach Islam or any other religion to some of their pupils.

The teaching of religion to children should be the responsibility of their respective parents according to their respective religion. It is inappropriate for the authorities to close down schools because of
religious considerations.
