Dancing diversity at Sukuh Temple

A

number of artists from various countries met for two days at the end of 2012 and the advent of 2013 to present art performances at Sukuh Temple, near Surakarta city, Central Java.

At the temple, which was built around the 14th century, the dancers explored diverse dance movements under the theme Srawung Seni Candi, a gathering of arts.

Sukuh Temple, known for its exotic reliefs, seemed to come to life in the presence of the 27 artists from different parts of the globe. The message of nature conservation and friendship conveyed by several dancers matched the atmosphere of the temple, on the slopes of Mount Lawu.

According to the initiator of Srawung Seni Candi, Suprapto Suryodarmo, nature conservation activity and the expression of arts and culture could be combined in harmony. This is also the message inherent in the reliefs of Sukuh Temple.
