ormer Bank Indonesia (BI) deputy governor and graft convict Miranda S. Goeltom will soon be behind bars after the Supreme Court rejected her appeal on Friday.
Supreme Court justice Artidjo Alkostar said that the lower court's verdict against Miranda was correct. 'The facts prove the defendant gave traveler's checks to members of the House of Representatives in return for her election [as BI deputy governor],' he said.
The Jakarta Corruption Court in 2012 sentenced Miranda to three years' imprisonment for bribing lawmakers to elect her as BI senior deputy governor in 2004. She was also ordered to pay Rp 100 million (US$10,427) in fines or serve an additional three months in prison.
The sentence was lower than the four-year sentence and Rp 150 million fine sought by prosecutors. Twenty-eight lawmakers have been convicted in the case for receiving bribes in the form of traveler's checks worth a total of Rp 20.85 billion from Miranda. The checks were disbursed through businesswoman Nunun Nurbaeti, who was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison.
