n official says a remote-controlled roadside bomb has killed three police officers in southern Afghanistan, including a deputy provincial police chief.
The attack occurred at 6 a.m. Sunday, the day the Taliban had said that its spring offensive would begin.
Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, deputy governor of Ghazni province, said the remote-controlled bomb exploded beneath a police convoy traveling to the provincial district of Zana Khan to take part in a military operation against insurgents. He says the blast destroyed the vehicle carrying Col. Mohammad Hussain, the deputy provincial police chief, killing him and two other officers.
Ahmadi says two other officers were also wounded in the attack, which he called a well-planned insurgent operation targeting Hussain.
