City to promote Kota Tua through festival

T

he Jakarta City administration in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will hold a festival entitled '€œCreative Festival of Kota Tua (Old Town)'€ to promote the historical sites in the downtown area.

'€œThe event will be held from August to September,'€ Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said on Friday, as quoted by tempo.co.

Mari explained that the concept of the festival was to provide the space for people to fill with creative industry products and art performances.

According to Mari, Kota Tua badly needs better promotion as a local icon, '€œso it has to be promoted on a grand scale through such an interesting event.'€

She said that the festival would also highlight education as one of its points by keeping museums in the area open until late at night every Saturday and Sunday.

Built by the Dutch in the early 1600s, Kota Tua is home to five museums, including the Wayang Museum and Bank Indonesia Museum.

Jakarta Governor Joko '€˜Jokowi'€™ Widodo said that he would make the festival an annual event. '€œ[This event] will also be utilized to realign the Kota Tua area,'€ said Jokowi.

The Jakarta administration has allocated Rp 12 billion (US$1.2 million) from the 2013 regional budget to renovate the Kota Tua area, which has become shabby due to the many street vendors and squatters. Old buildings in the area are also badly in need of a facelift. (nai)
