ozens of writers, bloggers and journalists have gathered in Makassar toattend a two-day citizen journalism festival held on May 23-24.

The conference, which was aimed at strengthening community voices to increase transparency, accountability and responsiveness of public services, was organized to mark the first ever citizen journalist festival held in Eastern Indonesia.

The conference discussed the roles that citizen journalists should play in improving public service delivery and the relationship between new media and more established outlets.

Besides the conference, various workshops on concise writing, photography techniques, video production for news, mini-documentaries and political cartoons was also available.

Media outlets like Kompas and The Jakarta Post digital were also there to meet digital enthusiasts.

With the fourth-largest number of Facebook users worldwide and the world'€™s fastest growth of new Twitter users, Indonesia has a booming online presence. People are more connected than ever and are using new technologies to share a wealth of information on the web.

Since the project began in 2010, nearly 400 citizen journalists have received training and mentoring support to improve their writing, interview and photography skills as well as to improve their understanding of journalistic ethics.(dic)
