he United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has given their 'Award for Outstanding Progress in Fighting Hunger and Undernourishment 2013' to Indonesia. The award will be presented in Rome, Italy, in the middle of June.
'Thirty five other countries from various regions will also receive honors for their achievements in increasing food production,' FAO director general Jose Graziano da Silva said on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
'The FAO chooses Indonesia because it has played a real role in reducing poverty and increasing food production,' he added.
Agriculture Minister, Suswono, said the FAO had urged Indonesia to play a bigger role in South-South cooperation, particularly by increasing food productions.
Indonesia has trained a number of farmers from Africa and the Asia Pacific in food productivity.
'Not only farmers, many food experts from Africa and Asia-Pacific have come here to learn about food,' said Suswono.
Other award winning countries include Brazil, Chile, Ethiopia, Ghana, Granada, Guyana, Nicaragua and Vietnam. (nai/ebf)
