ndonesian Navy warships and aircraft conducted a passing exercise on July 31 with the United Kingdom Carrier Strike Group (CSG) HMS Prince of Wales on the Banda Sea as the CSG was transiting the Indonesian Sea Lane of Communications (ALKI) III.

Indonesian warships KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata 331, KRI Frans Kaisiepo 368, KRI Kapak 625 and KRI Hampala 880 as well as a CN-235-220 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) with tail number P-8306 were involved, the Indonesian Navy said in a press release issued on Aug. 1.

The CSG, meanwhile, consisted of aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Tide-class replenishment tanker RFA Tidespring. Also included in the CSG were the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec and the Royal Norwegian Navy’s Fridtjof Nansen-class frigate HMNOS Roald Amundsen.

The exercise took place southwest of Buru Island, Maluku, when the four Indonesian warships formed Formation 1 and detected the UK CSG through radar at about 9:20 a.m. local time. The first visual contact with HMS Dauntless was confirmed between 9:50 a.m. and 10:05 a.m. through the Automatic Identification System (AIS).

The Indonesian Navy’s Third Fleet Command Sea Battle Command commanding officer Cdre. Andri Kristianto conveyed the greeting at 11:05 a.m.

Meanwhile, the CN-235-220 MPA took off from Ambon Air Force base at 12:30 p.m. to conduct an aerial security operation and photo exercise from 1:10 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

The exercise was completed at 4:45 p.m. with KRI Kapak and KRI Hampala escorting the UK’s CSG along ALKI III as KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata and KRI Frans Kaisiepo continued their own operations.
