he  lawyer for the Belitung official accused of assaultinga flight attendant has asked for her client to befreed. She reasoned that herclient, Belitung Regional Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD) chief ZakariaUmar Hadi,  had admitted his guilt and cooperated duringpolice questioning so there was no reason to puthim in jail.

The assault has been a trending topic on Twitter and Facebook with most people appalled by the assault.

Zakaria was jailed for the assault of Sriwijaya Air's senior flight attendant Nur Febriani during flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang on Wednesday night.

Zakaria slapped her in the face with a rolled-up newspaper and refused to switch off his phone during the flight. (hrl/dic)
