tate news agency LKBN Antara senior journalist Sayyid Dja'far bin Husein bin Ahmad Assegaf, popularly known as Djafar Assegaf, died at the age of aged 83 at Mitra Kemayoran Hospital, Jakarta, at 5 a.m. on Wednesday.
His son, Gazy Assegaf, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that late Djafar had suffered from a hernia for 17 years.
The former ambassador was also diagnosed with a tumor in his intestine and underwent surgery to remove the tumor in May, according to Djafar's daughter, Soraya DH. Assegaf.
'He survived after undergoing surgery, but after chemotherapy, his condition continued to worsen,' said Gazy as quoted by Antara news agency, on Wednesday. He said his father did not leave any messages for family members.
Djafar's body is currently at his home in Jl.Munggang Balekambang 58, Depok, West Java, and will be buried at Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery in Kalibata, South Jakarta.
'It is expected that the funeral will take place at 3 p.m.,' said a family member.
Djafar, who was also a former Indonesian ambassador to Vietnam, had been treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) Kencana in Central Jakarta since March 17 before he was taken to Mitra Kemayoran Hospital last week.
Djafar was widely known as being active in politics. He was former Nasdem Party board of trustees chairman and served many important positions in several media organizations, including as Media Indonesia deputy executive director. He was also a lecturer at the University of Indonesia's school of social and political science.
Antara chief editor Akhmad Kusaeni remembered Djafar as a widely known diplomat and journalist.
'We are at a great loss,' Akhmad said, adding that Djafar introduced the use of computers to Antara's new office in the late 1980's.(hrl/ebf)
