Marty criticized over migrant worker data

L

awmakers from the House of Representatives Commission IX overseeing manpower scolded Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa for failing to provide complete data on Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

In a hearing with Commission IX discussing the Jeddah riot, Marty told lawmakers that there was no accurate data on the number of Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

'€œThere is yet to be accurate data on our migrant workers abroad. However, we recorded 4,458,170 Indonesian immigrant workers abroad from January to December last year,'€ Marty said. A number of lawmakers, including Indra from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), seized the opportunity to attack Marty.

'€œIt'€™s interesting to see that the minister doesn'€™t have accurate and comprehensive data on our migrant workers abroad. How can the government protect the workers if it doesn'€™t how many there are?'€ Indra said.
