Model-actress Nadine Chandrawinata, known for her deep love of scuba diving while promoting Indonesian exotic destinations, also loves other sports and outdoor activities. The 29-year-old is giving her full support to the development of Indonesian badminton.

'€œI'€™ve been close to badminton since I was a child. My childhood was spent in Jember [East Java]. At that time, playing badminton was just a casual way to spend time. We had a public badminton court nearby our house where we often played the sport.

When I was there, the sport was really popular '€” we even used plywood as a substitute for a racket.
I remember when the shuttlecock went in a different direction than we wanted when it got hit by the plywood racket. Super hilarious!

Also, my great-great-grandparents used to play badminton. The habit continues until now. As a matter of fact, my father and his siblings were quite avid badminton fans, back in the era of [legendary Indonesian shuttler] Mulyadi in the 1970s.

I acknowledge that one of our badminton legends, Taufik Hidayat, has retired from his professional career. He'€™s done so much for the country. The best way to appreciate his hard work is by making a big effort to continue his achievements.

I think he'€™d be happy to see his successors do well in international events

I believe all sports have applied similar basic rules to reach victory: Keep on training, stay optimistic and never give up. It also applies in badminton. Life is like a rolling wheel; there are ups and downs. It also happens in badminton '€“ I hope we will get back on track to reach a higher position.

I never give up on badminton; I will always cheers for our shuttlers.

Believe it or not, support from us, like when we shout '€˜Indonesia'€™ to cheer our shuttlers in
a match, matters a lot to them. I know that feeling because I play basketball. When I'€™m in a game and people are cheering me on, it'€™s like a booster for me.

Apart from my busy daily life, I enjoy my '€˜me time'€™ to stay relaxed. It is a perfect time to contemplate '€” what have I done in my life so far and what have I earned? We need goals in life, things that we need to reach.

Besides contemplating, I like doing other things '€” I love drawing, painting and writing.

Of course, I enjoy a good dive in my free time. And when I'€™m home, I love to play badminton and swim.'€
