he U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake has struck northeast of Papua New Guinea. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The U.S.G.S. said the quake struck at 4:35 a.m. local time Monday about 68 miles (110 kilometers) east-northeast of the town of Taron on New Ireland island. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 235 miles (379 kilometers) below the earth's surface.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any warning related to the quake.
